Sam Kowalski is a one man project of Mateusz Kowalski – Polish singer and multiinstrumentalist, whose background in folk music, both in research and performance, vibrates strongly in this interpretation of the haunting pulse and melodies of oberek – the beloved dance of Polish village. Awarded a special prize by The Fryderyk Chopin Instute at Polish Radio’s Nowa Tradycja Festival (2024), it’s a search for a slowed down and more meditative take on this old music, traditionally rather lively, even fierce. Transfered from fiddle to guitalele and commented with traditional couplets, it’s a minimalist and imagination-triggering invitation to the world of music, which fortunately is not yet forgotten.
